The Committee for the Development of University Sport (CDSU), chaired by Stefan Bergh, had a fruitful inaugural meeting, discussing cooperation with the continental university sport federations, future development programmes and the promotion of the International Federation of University Sport (FISU) and university sport.

In a successful first online meeting of the new CDSU, Committee Chair Stefan Bergh welcomed FISU President Leonz Eder, FISU Secretary General Eric Saintrond, as well as CDSU Vice-Chair Delise O'Meally from the USA and the other five CDSU members, the Presidents of the Continental Federations: Lixin Liu (Asia), Alim Rachid Maluf Neto (Americas), Adam Roczek (Europe), David Schmude (Oceania) and Ashraf Sobhy Mohamed Hussein (Africa).

The importance of good cooperation between FISU and all the Continental University Sports Federations (CUSFs) - all represented in this Committee - was mentioned as a backbone for the next four years of work.

Committee Chair Stefan Bergh and members of the FISU staff gave an overview of the current aspects of cooperation between FISU and the CUSFs. Communication, project funding and knowledge transfer were mentioned among challenges such as overlapping event calendars and low impact programmes. Documentation (guidelines, regulations, MOUs) and sustainability were also raised.

All members agreed that while they will continue to recognise their differences - as they are more used to working with a regional approach - this is the place to set standards in line with FISU's global strategy and to work on both joint programmes and sport-related educational events.

FISU President Leonz Eder assured that it is his intention to empower the CUSF Presidents by giving them a stronger voice within the Committee. FISU Secretary General Eric Saintrond underlined the importance of the CUSFs working together to deal with an overwhelmingly full international sports calendar and to find a common solution to try and avoid overlaps.

In his role as Committee Chairman, Stefan Bergh concluded by encouraging the CDSU to identify precise objectives and to find a common way forward. He assured that, despite the differences between its members, this committee could achieve great things together by working as a team.
