The fantastic Bayer Leverkusen, led by Spanish coach Xabi Alonso, continue to show why they are the best team in Europe's major leagues. They are the only team not to have suffered a defeat in the 2023/2024 season and, with the title already secured, their unbeaten run could be even longer than the 50 matches they achieved with a 5-0 win away to Bochum.

On 87 points, Xabi Alonso's men remain 15 points clear of Bayern Munich, who beat Wolfsburg 2-0 at their own stadium. Should they win their next Bundesliga match against Augsburg, Xabi Alonso's side could equal the second-best ever points tally, behind the 91 achieved by Jupp Heynckes' Bayern Munich in 2012/13.

No team has ever gone unbeaten in the Bundesliga, although Bayern Munich have come close on a couple of occasions (they finished two seasons with just one defeat: in 2012/13 under Jupp Heynckes and in 1986/87 under Udo Lattek).

Since 1945, only Perugia (30 games in 1978/79, finishing second), AC Milan (34 in 1991/92), Juventus (38 in 2011/12) and Arsenal (38 in 2003/04) have done the same in Europe's top five leagues (England, Germany, Spain, France and Italy).

Leverkusen have gone 50 matches unbeaten, 33 in the Bundesliga, 5 in the Cup and 8 in the Europa League. They have won a remarkable 41 of those 50 matches, drawn just nine and only failed to score once (0-0 against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Matchday 19), a testament to their form.

The North Rhine-Westphalians have three games left to complete a perfect season: at home to Augsburg in the league on Saturday 18 May, the Europa League final against Atalanta in Dublin on Wednesday 22 May, and the DFB Cup final against Kaiserslautern in Berlin on Saturday 25 May.

In their 50th game together, their superiority on the pitch began to show in the 15th minute when Felix Passlack was sent off. Bayer Leverkusen opened the scoring through Czech striker Patrik Schick (41st minute) and doubled their lead with a penalty from Victor Boniface (45+2).

Amine Adli (76th) and Josip Stanisic (86th) completed the scoring in the second half. And in added time, Spain's Alejandro Grimaldo sealed the victory.

As well as one final match (at home to Augsburg next Saturday at 15:30 local time) in what could be an undefeated Bundesliga campaign, there are two cup matches to come, which will be even more important as they are two finals.

The Europa League final against Atalanta in Dublin on 22 May (9pm), followed by the DFB-Pokal final against Kaiserslautern on 25 May (8pm), could see the record-breaking side complete a season that will go down in the history books with a total of 53 unbeaten matches in European competition, a record not equalled since the 1960s by Eusebio's Portuguese giants Benfica.
