Luciano Cabral, president of the Brazilian Confederation of University Sports (CBDU), visited the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) and presented Paulo Wanderley, president of the institution, with a promotional shirt for the first FISU World University Championships Beach Sport, to be held in Rio de Janeiro from 2 to 8 September.

During the meeting, the presidents discussed the modalities of the first edition of the competition, which will be held in Rio de Janeiro in September. Cabral stressed the importance of outdoor sports and the full programme to Wanderley, who reiterated his support for Brazilian university sport.

"President Paulo Wanderley is a lover of university sport. He was even president of the Capixaba University Sports Federation, and confirmed the COB's support for the Games to be held in Brazil," said Cabral.

The meeting is important because the COB is the Confederation's main sporting partner and the largest sporting body in Brazil. "The Beach Games will take place right after the Olympic Games. Therefore, we really need the support of the Olympic system so that we can have the best conditions, especially the technical ones, to host a major event," explained Cabral.

With the Games, Brazil is once again making history as a pioneer, introducing a new event to the FISU calendar. Brazil was also the first country to host the Futsal World University Championship in 1984 in Sao Paulo. The country has won the men's title six times and the women's title five times.

In 2018,the CBDU held the first international university competition, the FISU America Games. And, more recently, in 2020, it organised the FISU Challenge eSports Football, the sport's first international championship.

The first edition of the competition will take place in Rio de Janeiro from 2 to 8 September, with Praia de Botafogo and Arpoador as the venues. Around 2,000 participants from 50 different countries are expected to compete at the 2024 FISU World University Championships Beach Sports in six sports: beach volleyball, beach soccer, beach handball, beach wrestling, beach tennis and surfing.
