West Indies cricketer Devon Thomas has been handed a five-year ban from cricket after confessing to seven breaches of anti-corruption regulations, as announced by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday.

The ICC stated that the last 18 months of the ban are suspended, with the penalty being retroactively applied by one year. Thomas, who represented West Indies in 34 matches across all three international formats between 2009 and 2022, committed offences during three distinct tournaments: the Caribbean Premier League, the Lanka Premier League, and the Abu Dhabi T10.

Such charges involved the 34-year-old Thomas admitting guilt to being involved in attempts to manipulate matches during the tournament held in Sri Lanka. He also acknowledged several instances of neglecting to report illicit approaches to the appropriate authorities.

"Having played both international and professional domestic/franchise cricket, Devon attended numerous anti-corruption education sessions," explained Alex Marshall, general manager of the ICC's integrity unit.

"He therefore knew what his obligations were under the anti-corruption codes but failed to meet these obligations across three different franchise leagues.

"This ban is apt and should send a strong message to players and corrupters that attempts to corrupt our sport will be dealt with firmly."

Thomas, an all-rounder and occasional wicketkeeper, made his international debut in 2009, marking the beginning of his career in which he played 21 one-day internationals. He also participated in 12 T20 matches and made one Test appearance, notably against Australia in Adelaide in 2022.

The ICC has suspended eighteen months of his ban.
